Shared Context Is the New Territory
A one-person agent workflow breaks the moment it leaves the builder’s laptop. The frontier right now is not smarter prompts. It is portable context: reusable, versionable “Skills” that turn team judgment into delegation-ready infrastructure. Control that layer, and you gain institutional leverage.

A friend messaged me last week, half-frustrated, half-amused. He had spent two months building an agent workflow that ran his entire client intake process. It worked beautifully. Then his colleague tried to use it and had to rebuild half of it from memory, because most of the actual intelligence lived in a running conversation on his laptop, not in anything you could hand to another person.
This is the small, unglamorous scene behind a much larger shift. The interesting frontier in agentic work right now is not what one clever operator can build alone in a chat window. It is what happens when they try to hand that work to a teammate, an agent, or a future version of themselves. Most of it does not survive the trip.
That quiet failure is where the next power map is being drawn.
The primitive nobody names
Vercel recently shipped something worth reading carefully: Agent Skills. On the surface it looks like another developer feature. What it actually is, is a category primitive. Skills turn one-off prompts into a reusable, versionable library of agent behavior. In Vercel's own framing, the point is to stop re-explaining your project's tribal knowledge every time you open a new chat.
Read that sentence twice. It is doing more work than it looks.
For two years the dominant image of AI-native work has been a single builder with a good model, moving faster than a team. That story is true, and it will keep being true for solo operators. But inside any organization with more than a handful of people, the constraint has already moved. The scarce resource is not model access. It is shared context: the accumulated judgment, decisions, guardrails, and small preferences that make an agent useful for this company, this team, this workflow, on this day.
Until recently that context lived in one place: someone's head, or the running memory of a chat they never closed. Skills change that. They make context a thing you can install.
Delegation as a design surface
Once context is installable, delegation stops being a metaphor and becomes an operating primitive. This is what tools like eve's subagents are working out in the open. Subagents are not a clever prompt trick. They are the beginning of a design language for who does what, with what authority, using what shared workspace, and how the handoff gets recorded when the work moves.
That sounds mundane until you sit with what it replaces. Most agent work today is delegated by accident. Someone opens a chat, gets a good result, copies part of it into another tool, forgets the reasoning, moves on. The next person starts from scratch. The agent has no idea what was decided yesterday. The team has no memory of its own AI use.
A subagent with a defined boundary is the first honest attempt to fix that at the workflow level. It says: this agent has this job, this context, this permission, and this handoff back to a human or another agent when it hits its edge. That is not automation. That is organizational design compressed into a runtime.
The rise of the control plane
Zoom out one more level and you see a category forming. Products like Pentagon and Wato are describing themselves as control planes for agent-native work. Snowflake, Asana, Microsoft, and Adobe are converging on the same vocabulary from different angles: a coordination layer where humans and agents share memory, permissions, and visibility across the organization.
The language varies. The idea is the same. There is a layer above the agents and below the people where the actual company lives, and whoever owns that layer owns the coordination.
My read is that this is a bigger structural move than the model wars. Model quality will keep improving and keep commoditizing. Coordination infrastructure compounds. It accumulates institutional memory, permission graphs, delegation contracts, and audit trails that get more valuable the more work runs through them. That is how cloud platforms became load-bearing. It is how ERPs became impossible to rip out. The control plane for agent work is being built now, in public, by a dozen companies at once, and most enterprises are not paying attention because it does not look like a product they know how to buy.
What actually becomes possible
Strip the platform language away and the possibility is straightforward. A team can now package its judgment.
Not its outputs. Its judgment. The way it decides which customer segment gets a proactive outreach and which does not. The tone it uses in a first reply versus an escalation. The three checks it runs before sending a proposal. The internal glossary that keeps five product names from being confused. All of that, previously trapped in the heads of two or three good operators, can be written once as a Skill, installed across the team, versioned when the policy changes, and delegated to agents that will apply it consistently at three in the morning.
That is a genuinely new capability. It is not faster content. It is not cheaper labor. It is the ability to make a team's operating judgment portable.
The organizations that treat this seriously will look different within a year. They will hire for context packaging, not just prompt fluency. They will define delegation contracts the way earlier generations defined RACI charts, except these will actually run. They will version their Skills the way engineering teams version code, with owners, reviewers, and deprecation notices. And they will spend real time on the boring question of what belongs in the shared library and what does not, because context bloat is its own form of decay.
The power question
This is where the geopolitics of the office gets interesting. Whoever controls the coordination layer inside a company gains a form of leverage that did not exist before. Not because they hoard information, but because they own the surface where decisions get encoded and replayed.
Inside enterprises, that surface will be contested. IT will want it. Operations will want it. Marketing, sales, and engineering will each try to build their own. The teams that move first with clear taxonomies, real delegation contracts, and disciplined pruning will find that their way of working quietly becomes the company's way of working. The teams that treat context as ceremony, one more meeting artifact to file and forget, will be absorbed by whichever group did the work.
Across companies, the same logic scales up. The vendors who own the control plane will sit closer to the operating core of their customers than any SaaS category has managed in a decade. That is the prize Vercel, Snowflake, Asana, Microsoft, and a handful of startups are quietly competing for. It is worth watching who wins, because the winner ends up shaping how a lot of white-collar work gets done.
The discipline this asks for
There is a quiet operating discipline hiding inside all of this, and it is worth naming without dressing it up.
Packaging context forces you to decide what actually matters. Most tribal knowledge, once written down, turns out to be either wrong, out of date, or embarrassingly thin. That is useful information. A team that takes Skills seriously will spend the first month discovering how much of its expertise was cargo cult and how much was real. Both findings are gifts.
Delegation contracts force the same honesty about authority. If an agent can act without a human check, someone has to be willing to say so, in writing, and own the outcome. If it cannot, the escalation path has to be real, not decorative. The temptation to let agents run further than the team is willing to defend is constant, and it is the fastest way to burn the trust you will need later. Restraint here is not caution. It is the thing that lets you go faster next quarter.
And there is the discipline of what to leave out. Every Skill added is a small tax on future clarity. The best teams will be ruthless about pruning, because a library nobody trusts is worse than no library at all.
The workforce question
If you are running a team right now, the useful question is not which AI tool to adopt next. Most of them will converge. The useful question is what your team's shared context looks like today, and who owns making it portable.
Who writes your team's Skills? Who reviews them? Who decides when a policy changes and the old version gets deprecated? Who defines the delegation boundaries and the handoff points where an agent stops and a person starts? If those questions do not have names attached, the coordination layer in your company is being built by accident, and probably by someone else.
The teams I keep watching are the ones that have quietly reorganized around this. They still ship. They still sell. They still market. But underneath the visible work, they are building a second thing: a library of installable judgment that gets sharper every week. That library is not on any org chart. In two years it will be the org chart.
The next competitive edge will not be the best model. It will be the best shared context, staffed by people who know when to package, when to delegate, and when to say no. The rest is running commentary.
